Brief Bio of the Speaker

Francisco Guinea is a Senior Researcher at the IMDEA Nanoscience Institute in Madrid, Spain, and Research Professor at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC).

He has been a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) since 1987, served as Professor at the University of Manchester (UK) from 2014 to 2019, and has been a Senior Researcher at the IMDEA Nanoscience Institute since 2014.

He is the recipient of the Spanish Royal Physical Society Medal, the "Blas Cabrera" Spanish National Prize for Physics, and the Beller Lectureship Award from the American Physical Society. In 2017, he was elected a Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and he is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

His main research interests lie in condensed matter theory and low-dimensional physics, including strongly correlated systems, quantum transport, strain and two-dimensional materials. Up to now, he has published more than 500 papers with over 70,000 citations (excluding self-citations) and an h-index of 108, many of which have appeared in leading journals such as Nature, Science, and Physical Review Letters.

Abstract

The phase diagram of multilayer graphene stacks has become a very active research topic in recent times. These systems show a complex behavior, including apparently incompatible features, like superconductivity and magnetism. These multilayers also provide a route to very flat electronic bands, alternative to the ones already observed in twisted stacks. Recent experimental and theoretical research on rhombohedral graphene stacks will be presented, with emphasis on novel phases and anomalous behavior not commonly found in other systems.
