On October 31st -November 3rd, a delegation of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo paid a friendly visit to ICQD. The delegation from Canada included IQC executive director Prof. Raymond Laflamme, IQC scientist Prof. David Cory and Prof. Guoxing Miao. On behalf of USTC and UW respectively, associate president for international affairs Prof. Jianwei Pan and Prof. Raymond Laflamme signed the memorandum of understanding on cooperation in education and research.

Prof. Jianwei Pan extended a warm welcome to the guests and chaired the meeting on the bilateral exchange and collaboration between USTC and UW. Dr. Mi Zhou, member of the Committee for International Cooperation gave a brief overview of USTC. Prof. Pan then highlighted the development as well as the strength of quantum science and technology at Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale (HFNL). Prof. Jinlong Yang, Executive Dean of the School of Chemistry and Materials Science and Prof. Zhenyu Zhang, ICQD co-director shortly introduced their research and specialization afterwards. During the later discussion, the two sides explored possible cooperation in education and research. They exchanged views on a wide range of issues, such as joint research activities, personnel exchange, joint training program and dual degree program.

The delegation also visited Key lab of quantum information, CAS and was escorted on a tour of laboratories at HFNL on quantum physics and quantum information, quantum computation, high-Tc superconductivity, low-dimensional physics and on signle molecular science. The visiting guests appraised high research ability of both labs and wished to explore possible collaborations in the field of quantum information. During the stay, Prof. Raymond Laflamme delivered a talk entitled “Quantum Error Correction: from theory to practice” in the ICQD’s distinguished lecture series in quantum information. Prof. David Cory was invited to give the ICQD’s monthly seminar on “Controlling Quantum Devices”.

On the evening of November 1st, Prof. Laflamme and Prof. Cory attended “Meet the Gurus Face to Face” - a popular student forum activity at USTC with Prof. Zhenyu Zhang and Prof. Jiangfeng Du. This event has provided the students with a great opportunity for learning from the broad perspectives on life and research that the scholars were delighted to share.
Through recent reciprocal visits between ICQD and IQC, both institutions aspire to mutually beneficial long-term cooperation on quantum science and technology. And they look forward to promoting such cooperation on other disciplines between two universities.
