Abstract | In this talk, we will attempt to elucidate the important roles of single-atomic-layer steps and their electronic nature in determining surface morphological evolution and structural formation through case studies, including formation of atom wires, prevention of electrical breakdown in nanodevices, and nucleation behavior of carbon atoms on stepped transition-metal surfaces in the early stage of graphene growth. |
