The 8th International Workshop on Quantum Energy held in Kunming

( 2018-10-22 )

The 8th International Workshop on Quantum Energy, co-organized by the International Center for Quantum Design of Functional Materials (ICQD) at USTC and the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Computational Physical Sciences at Fudan University, partially supported by the School of Physics and Astronomy at Yunnan University has been held successfully on October 17-19 in Kunming, Yunnan. Prof. Zhenyu Zhang from USTC, Prof. Xingao Gong from Fudan University and Prof. Hongxing Xu from Wuhan University were co-chairs of the workshop. Prof. Jun Zhang from Yunnan University was the local organization chair. The workshop brought together more than 100 scientists, young researchers and graduate students, including 17 international experts from US, Canada, Switzerland and Singapore.

It is preceded by Quantum Energy I-VII, held in Weihai, Shandong (2011); Yancheng, Jiangsu (2012); Zhengzhou, Henan (2013); Chengdu, Sichuan (2014); Hangzhou, Zhejiang (2015); Xiangtan, Hunan (2016) and Haikou, Hainan (2017). The initial motivation of the workshop was to provide a unique platform for the research teams funded by the Key Program on Energy Materials of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) to exchange ideas and progresses with their peers and a selected group of domestic and international speakers. With the awarding of the “111” project on Quantum Design of Novel Energy Materials based at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the workshop has been significantly expanded to also include participants of the oversea and domestic members of the “111” team since 2014.

This workshop was divided into ten main sessions, covering Fundamentals & Methodologies; Topological Quantum Materials; Growth and Properties of 2D Materials; Energy Conversion Processes; Nanoplasmonics for Energy; Optoelectronics; Excited-State and Nonequilibrium Phenomena; Nanoscale Transport Phenomena; Novel Materials Discoveries by Design; Solar Cells. Assistant president Shumei Hao from Yunnan University presided over the opening ceremony. Vice president, Prof. Li Zhang from Yunnan University and Prof. Xingao Gong from Fudan University delivered the welcome and opening remarks.

The scientific program included 25 invited talks and 38 poster presentations on recent theoretical and experimental progress. Invited Speakers, including Prof. Steven G. Louie (Member of US National Academy of Sciences, University of California at Berkeley, USA), Prof. Michele Parrinello (Foreign Member of US National Academy of Sciences, ETH Zürich, Switzerland), Prof. Hong Guo (Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, McGill University, Canada), Prof. Mei-Yin Chou (Member of Academia Sinica in Taiwan), Prof. Naomi J. Halas (Member of US National Academy of Sciences, Rice University, USA), Prof. Feng Liu (University of Utah, USA), Prof. Michael Tringides & Caizhuang Wang (Iowa State University, USA), Prof. Xuesen Wang (National University of Singapore, Singapore), Prof. Peter Nordlander (Rice University, USA), Prof. Yanfa Yan (University of Toledo, USA), Prof. Shengbai Zhang (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA), Prof. Guangyu Guo (National Taiwan University, Taiwan), Prof. Jian Shen & Dr. Jihui Yang (Fudan University), Prof. Suhuai Wei (Beijing Computational Science Research Center), Prof. Chen Fang (Institute of Physics, CAS), Prof. Nan Xu (Wuhan University), Prof. Jinho Choi (Soochow University), Prof. Huaibin Shen (Henan University), Prof. Zhu Liu (Yunnan University), as well as Profs. Bing Wang, Xiaojun Wu, Jun Jiang, Yang Zhang from USTC, all made high-quality presentations.

During the poster session, 12 posters got the best poster awards among over 38 posters from USTC, Peking University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, Zhengzhou University, Henan University, Xiangtan University, Shenzhen University, Yunnan University, Shanxi Normal University, etc.

Prof. Steven G. Louie, Prof. Michele Parrinello and Prof. Shouzhu Zhang presented Best Poster Awards to the winners at the closing ceremony. Prof. Zhenyu Zhang made a conclusion. The workshop provided a high-level platform for presenting recent developments and discussing emerging themes and challenges in quantum materials research. It has positive impacts on the future international cooperation between China and other countries.
