ICQD & IQC/WIN begin bilateral cooperations

( 2012-10-08 )

On September 4th-7th, the Center’s co-director Prof. Zhenyu Zhang paid a short visit to the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) together with center scientist Prof. Jiangfeng Du, tough upon several issues including scientific collaborations and joint training programs for graduate students.

Prof. Zhang and Prof. Du were warmly welcomed by IQC executive director Prof. Raymond Laflamme, WIN executive director Prof. Arthur Carty and Prof. Drew Knight, chief of the international programs at Waterloo. During a candid conversation, both sides expressed genuine wishes to promote bilateral collaborations between ICQD and IQC/WIN, looking forward to carry out long-term and in-depth cooperation in the future between USCT and UW.

Two talks entitled “Squeezing Electrons in Conventional Metal Films and Topological Insulator Heterostructures” and “Spin-based quantum computing in solids” were arranged separately at IQC and WIN. During their stay, the guests were also invited to visit Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre, the main edifice on campus where both institutes are located. In addition, they had talks with distinguished professors from Physics Department and exchanged views on potential collaborations on quantum information processing, energy materials and nano technology.

A delegation of IQC led by Prof. Raymond Laflamme will shortly visit ICQD at the invitation of Prof. Zhang, and a memorandum of understanding will be signed by both sides after further discussions.

About the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC)

The Institute for Quantum Computing is a scientific research institute at the University of Waterloo harnessing the quantum laws of nature to develop powerful new technologies that will transform information technology and drive the 21st century economy. Building on the University of Waterloo’s longstanding strengths in engineering, mathematics and computer science, IQC quickly recruited world-class researchers in the theory underlying quantum information, providing the nucleus of excellence to attract experimentalists. In just 10 years, IQC has grown to become the world’s largest research centre devoted to quantum information science and technology. It has created a unique training program for postdoctoral fellows and students, and is intensifying communication and outreach program. IQC- and Canada- are becoming internationally recognized as leaders in the global quantum race.

About Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN)

Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology is an independent research institute at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Since its inception, it’s positioned itself at the forefront of nanotechnology. The advent of nanotechnology has been called the next industrial revolution. At WIN, researchers are assembling tiny nanoelectronic components molecule by molecule and growing nanowires with diameters the width of an atom. Through its focus on nanomaterials, nanoelectronics, nanobiosystems and nanoinstrumentation, the institute is facilitating advances that promise to transform medicine, electronics and energy. By bringing together top talent from a wide range of disciplines, WIN has created an environment ripe for new insights and breakthroughs. At the same time, it has established a network of collaborations and partnerships that spans the globe.
